Born in Glasgow, he trained as an architect and interior designer - as did many people. So why was he so different? Well, he introduced symbolism, balanced light with dark, and blended tradition and modernity. The giant achievements of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in both architecture and design now show him to be a man ahead of his time. Original patina can't be faked, so furniture makers who want to give wood an aged appearance have to use special techniques to make the wood look old. Hand waxing as opposed to lacquering gives a far more authentic and rich finish especially after two or three coats. Once the paint is completely cured the knots are exposed and corners are worn off. But it's the woodworm effect that gives the furniture unique, two hundred-year old charm. Once the ageing process is complete each piece is hand waxed to a level of perfection customers rarely experience.
